Alexandria, VA - August 20, 2012 -- A new immigration policy recently launched by the Obama Administration could backfire when senior voters head for the polls this fall. Seventy-seven percent of Senior Americans do not agree with the new "deferred action" immigration policy, according to a new poll conducted by The Senior Citizens League, one of the nation's largest nonpartisan seniors groups. "The new policy would provide as many as 1.2 million illegal immigrants with a path to Social Security benefits and add huge new future liabilities to the program," says TSCL Chairman Larry Hyland..This week, one new cosponsor Rep. Corrine Brown signed on to the Social Security 2100 Act. The total is now up to sixty-four. If signed into law, H.R. 1391 would increase Social Security benefits by 2 percent, cut taxes for over 11 million seniors, increase the minimum benefit to 125 percent of the poverty line, and make COLAs more fair and accurate. It would also take measures to increase the solvency of the trust fund beyond the next seventy-five years, through the year 2100..Hang up the phone or shut the door if you encounter any of the following:.The proposal to adopt the chained CPI for adjusting Social Security and other federal retirement benefits has been a central feature of nearly every major budget negotiation since 20The adoption of the chained CPI to calculate COLAs would not only permanently reduce Social Security benefits of more than 60 million beneficiaries, but would also increase taxes, because personal exemptions and tax brackets which are adjusted for inflation would rise more slowly..In 2017, you are allowed to earn ,880 or in the months prior to full retirement age without any reduction to your benefits. The resolution would then require the President to submit legislation to Congress within 60 days of receiving the Trustees' recommendations. He originally planned to "file and then suspend" his benefit at 66 and continue working until age 70 while his benefit grew. Meanwhile at 66, I was hoping to take a spouse benefit based on his earnings of ,150. That would also provide me with a higher survivors benefit of almost ,100 per month by 2021 should anything happen to him. Because of the recent changes is this strategy no longer available to us?
